2008 ASA Golf Tournament
2008 ASA Golf Tournament

For the third year in a row, we sponsored a hole at the American Subcontractors Association Golf Tournament at Carlton Oaks.

We enjoyed seeing a lot of our customers and friends as well as meeting new people in the construction community. We treated everyone to Chicago Style hot dogs, frothy beer and shots of Patron. It was a real party out on Hole #5.

The highlight of the day was our t-ball competition. All 160 golfers took a swing at the whiffle ball. Andrew Smith, from AIG emerged as the long-ball winner. He'll be attending the October 12th Chargers-Patriots football game with a guest.

If you made it to the tournament, thanks for stopping by Hole #5. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

Four Women Win the ASA Build Off
Four Women Win the ASA Build Off

Four women emerged victorious amongst a field of men in the first ASA Build Off. In what became an epoch battle of the sexes, Kim Clark, Karin Yokley and Tarah Miinch from Clark Steel Fabricators and Laura Ehrlich from Munyon Insurance out-engineered, out-built and out-smarted the competition to build the tallest spaghetti tower. "We wanted to beat the men so bad," reflected Ms. Yokley, "We didn't even need to think, we just jumped into action, bouncing design ideas off each other along the way." Ms. Erlich owed their team's success to building a strong foundation and having a clear separation of tasks. She commented that, "Understanding the building limitations of the spaghetti at an early stage was crucial."

Each team began with 40 strands of spaghetti and 6 feet of masking tape, having 20 minutes to build the tallest tower. At the halfway mark Johnson Barnes and Finch had a commanding lead and a solid base to build on. At the final measure, though, their tower leaned too far to carry them onto victory. The Chula Vista Electric, Area-West Fence Team showed the most advanced engineering, pre-fabricating all their tower parts to erect a structure reminscent of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. One inch higher and the team would have pulled off a victory.

Participants commented that the competition taught them some important lessons, including, the value of teamwork, advanced planning and using competitive intelligence. The ASA Mixer and Build Off, sponsored by SMART Safety Group was a great success. Everyone arrived as a contender and went home a winner with a tummy full of SMART's Mama T's brownies.

Annual Safety Conference Wrap Up
Annual Safety Conference Wrap Up

SMART SAFETY Group (SSG) held a Recruiting extravaganza high atop the Downtown Seattle Westin Hotel, Tuesday evening, June 13, 2006. Guests were greeted with a breath-taking view of the sun setting over the Puget Sound, accented by the snow-capped North Cascade Mountains. American Society and Safety Engineer (ASSE) Conference goers capped the second day of the conference with an up close and personal look at SSG, an up and coming player in the exciting safety services arena. Robert Lipton, SMART's CEO, Kevin Downey, VP Human Resources and Matthew Jacquel, CSP, Safety Consultant played host along with three beautiful event hostesses.

Safety professionals, consultants, students, college professors and other attendees came to the event from all over the U.S. They received wonderful give-a-ways culminating with the Grand Prize award, a vacation package for two to America’s Finest City, San Diego. The vacation package included round trip airfare, a 2 night, 3 day stay at the downtown San Diego Hilton, overlooking the scenic San Diego Harbor with tickets to Sea World, a San Diego Padres game and the world famous San Diego Zoo.

The crowd was stunned when the winner of the contest, Michael Winters, a greater San Diego area resident, asked that the trip be awarded to someone that had not experienced the amazing San Diego lifestyle. Andy Johnson, an Occupational Health and Safety student, from Topsham, Maine, won the trip in the second drawing. "I am so excited to visit San Diego. I was born there, but haven’t been back since," exclaimed Mr. Johnson. For his graciousness in giving up the trip, Michael Winters will receive a special prize for his good sportsmanship.
